Class of 1966 - Vocal Instructor and Chorus Conductor
1966屆畢業 — 指揮聲樂家
Jimmy Chan Foon Sheung graduated from St. Paul’s College in 1966. Chan, a bass-baritone conductor, is currently a vocal instructor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Baptist University.
Since the 1970s, Chan has often performed with and conducted many local and foreign choruses. Between 1973 and 1983, he headed the St. Paul’s Co-educational College music department. He was the Hong Kong Silver Jubilee Singers’ founding conductor and music director. After postgraduate studies in the USA, Chan has taught vocals and conducting at the University of Hong Kong and the Academy for Performing Arts, and has been (among others) the Hong Kong Children’s Choir’s artistic director and the Hong Kong Oratorio Society’s conductor. From 2004 to 2013, he was Opera Hong Kong Chorus’ director and conductor. Chan has also adjudicated many choral/singing competitions, continuously advancing the city’s choral music scene.
This lifelong dedication to music stems from his College days. Chan’s interest in music was apparent at a young age, but he could not afford music lessons. It was Moses Wu at St. Paul’s who gave him free lessons on the violin, chorus, and conducting as a means of passing the torch. Chan returned to his alma mater in 1986 to conduct the College’s 135th anniversary concert.
