Class of 1916 - King of Rice

1916屆畢業 — 穀米之王

Tse Yu Chuen graduated from the College in 1916 and successively worked in various merchant companies as an accountant and manager. After the war, Tse co-founded Cornwell & Co with his acquaintances. He was appointed to supervise rice rationing in Hong Kong after the war, preventing dishonest sellers from mixing in poor-quality stock or even gravel. In 1952, he was promoted to Chinese Food Section Head, which additionally included supervising cooking oil and flour rationing.

An active social welfare figure, Tse was an Anti-Mui Tsai Society committee member and spent his life establishing kaifong (mutual aid) associations across the city after the war. Tse had been a vice-chair of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, had chaired the South China Athletic Association, and was a Chung Sing Benevolent Society supervisor. He was appointed JP and appointed OBE in 1958, and served the Legislative Council between 1964 and 1970.

Tse also gave back to the College. He had been on the College Council since 1953 and led fundraising efforts for the 1960s Campus Reconstruction Project. When the College built a swimming pool, both the Alumni Association and Tse’s family donated towards its construction; the pool, completed in 1979, was in turn named in his memory.
