Class of 1919 - King of Firewood

1919屆畢業 — 柴薪之王

Ho Ka Lau graduated from St. Paul’s College in 1919. He is remembered for his athletic achievements, his contribution to Hong Kong’s post-war recovery, and his instrumental role in reopening the boys’ college.

Ho’s life was inseparable from that of sports. In the 1920s, he represented China in multiple Far Eastern Championship Games, winning gold in volleyball in 1921 and silver in basketball in 1923. Later, Ho was a sports consultant for the College. He also had his own business, which sold sporting goods and firewood. In 1951, Ho served on the predecessor to Hong Kong’s Olympic Committee. As China opened up in 1979, Ho helped surface tennis courts in Beijing and Shanghai.

After the Second World War, Hong Kong implemented rationing due to material shortages; Ho was appointed to be in charge of firewood rationing.

Ho formerly chaired the Old Boys’ Union. When St. Paul’s College was merged with St. Paul’s Girls’ College in 1945, Ho was determined not to let the boys’ school fade into history. Organising activities and negotiating with the diocese, St. Paul’s College eventually reopened in 1950, albeit relocated to Bonham Road. Ho later served on the College Council as honorary treasurer until 1971.
