1972屆畢業 — 跨媒體文化人

Lawrence Cheng (nicknamed ‘Ah Tan’) studied at St. Paul’s from 1967 to 1974. A host, disc jockey, film producer, director, screenwriter, actor, and writer, Cheng is a veteran in Hong Kong’s entertainment industry and is known, among other things, as the creator of The Yuppie Fantasia franchise.

Cheng joined Rediffusion Television (RTV, which became Asia Television (ATV), which stopped broadcasting in 2016) after he graduated from college. He worked on such television series as Reincarnated and The Trio, and in 1983, became ATV’s assistant creative director. He has gone on to work at Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), TVB (hosting the Jade Solid Gold Best 10 Awards, the Miss Hong Kong Pageant, and others), and Commercial Radio (CR) (first as CR2 director and later as CR’s COO and creative director). Since the 2000s, Cheng has been an active film producer, including 2003’s Truth or Dare: 6th Floor Rear Flat and the horror movie franchise The Eye. He has also created HiEggo, an website / online video channel focusing on health and lifestyle.

A creative mind since his youth, Cheng found inspiration from his Chinese teachers at St. Paul’s; he once edited the College bulletin Scope. He fondly remembers the College’s watermelon balls, reminiscing on how he would go to the playground whenever possible. Though he has met thousands of people since graduation, Cheng says all of St. Paul’s alumni have an easily-recognisable trait: a ‘charming’ innocence.
