Chan Hing Kai studied sixth form at St. Paul’s College from 1976 to 1977, and is a screenwriter, producer, and director. He has written/co-written over forty movies, including The Yuppie Fantasia franchise (co-written with fellow Pauline, Lawrence Cheng, since 1986), A Better Tomorrow (1986), Heart to Hearts (1988), Tom, Dick and Hairy (1993), and Jiang Hu: The Triad Zone (2000). He currently heads the film division in the Media Asia Group and is a guest lecturer at the Hong Kong Baptist University Academy of Film.
Since graduating from university in 1981, Chan has worked for Commercial Radio, TVB, Radio Television Hong Kong, and Asia Television, mostly in a creative and production capacity. He co-founded People’s Productions in 1990 with Lawrence Cheng and film director Gordon Chan and founded Icon Pictures in 2000. Outside of film and radio, Chan was also creative director for Culturecom from 1993 to 1995, during which the company bought the local rights to the Dragon Ball manga.
A quiet, bookish character, Chan was in for a shock when he entered St. Paul’s in its 125th anniversary year. Frank, casual, yet united, the College’s atmosphere made Chan more open to new opportunities — despite his short stay, he was a Chinese editor for Scope and a student photographer for the year’s festivities.
